With this cold weather upon us, we are always looking for ways to ‘warm up’ our home!

I looked for other words instead of ‘cozy’ which sounds a little non-designer... some of the words that came up were comfortable, cushy, intimate, snug, safe, cuddled up, secure and sheltered… i realised that all year round I want our home to feel comfortable, snug and intimate.

There are the obvious ways of warming up the home; the use of rugs, even layering them one on top of the other can add that extra softness underfoot, the use of blankets on the sofa, the more textures used, the better, cushions.. all shapes and sizes, colours and patterns, add to the rich, layered look!

There are also some less obvious approachs; Books!! A library of books does wonders to create a warm space! The book shelves can also include pictures, candles, small collectables..anthing to add the personal touch.

The creation of small, intimate areas is a must! Especially in large open spaces like lofts, which are amazing, we should consider small corners for conversation, without the big screen TV in front of us… maybe divided with a console table or some kind of screen.

Painting the walls a dark, deep, wonderful hue can also be beautifully embracing. For some reason a lot of people shy away from going dark but it really adds a lot of magic to a space.

Another important one is lighting! Whether it be candle light or the electric type, lighting is crucial to warming a space and creating a mood. Different types of lighting should be used - wall lights, floor standing, table lamps to enhance to intimate atmosphere.

Even in the summer months I love our home to feel comfortable... a calm sanctuary where I am always happy to spend time!
