Here we go... our first post of the green nature ! Both Laura and I are passionate about the plant-form… inside, outside, small and tall and we of course like to include greenery in our work whether it be interiors, exteriors or artwork.

This week I was visiting the wonderful website theplanthunter.com.au and one of their articles began with:

“Humans need nature. We need trees, plants, gardens, and all forms of non-human life around us. It sustains us on a number of practical, psychological and spiritual levels. This, whilst often not easy to quantify, is a serious matter.”

It goes on to discuss green spaces within the city (which we would like to explore in another post) but for now I am talking about plants in the home.

I used to tell everyone how good I was at killing plants - so much so that I stopped trying to grow them. But I love them so much that I did try again… slowly slowly.. one plant and then another and I found with lots of love and care I was managing to keep them alive…

When designing our new house, it began with the patio. I wanted/want it to be filled with greenery, blurring the lines between inside and out. I also knew I wanted an indoor forest!

The winters where we live bring with them strong winds so we are still learning what type of plants to fill the patio with and in the meantime I am growing my indoor forest…

I am obsessed with it. I may end up being seen as the crazy plant woman (instead of cats) but it brings us so much joy!

So why have indoor plants in our interiors?

They purify the air giving a sense of health and wellbeing. This has to be worth it on its own!

The bringing in of nature adds life and vitality to any space. I personally love the tall tree-like plants indoors.

Along with soft furnishings they add colour and texture in their natural form. Plants offer an infinite choice of patterns and colours; some are more geometrical and some look wild, some are bright and some are dark, some are as small as jewelery and some are huge - they offer endless possibilities of play.

They can create stunning room dividers and help separate spaces. Next to a window, they filter the light and create beautiful shadows which also helps to add depth. They can also be seen as a kind of Mashrabia; you can see outside from the inside but you can hardly be seen from the outside.

They fit every style from modern to ethnic, eclectic or classical, plants cannot be in bad taste! You can start growing plants slowly so it won't ruin your budget.

Warning: growing plants can be highly addictive!

I am looking forward to one day creating a green wall for an M&J project!
