Tips on how to decorate a rented apartment

With house prices rising all the time, more and more people are renting. This is not a bad thing and even financially can sometimes make more sense.

With this in mind, we would like to share with you some tips of how to decorate your rented place.

Walls

Paint This is the obvious one. Paint can change any space dramatically. It could be just one wall in a room or the whole room (including the ceiling if you dare!) You can play with the finishes of paint i.e. matte, eggshell or gloss. Chalkboard paint is another fun alternative.

Washi tape and Wall decals Instead of painting the walls, the use of washi tape is a fun way to "wake them up". Its removable, wont ruin the wall once you remove them and can easily mask small holes. It also offers a large scale of possibilities, your patience will be the limit!

It can also be used to frame your pictures and artwork without ruining your walls.

Or why not creating an herbarium on your walls?

Canvas You can invest in a huge white canvas which can be painted or papered and laid on floor or fixed as usual.

Another way to add colour to your interior is the use of colourful furniture or even clothes!

Artwork Adding artwork to any wall is great for adding colour and interest. The small holes are easy to fix afterwards. And if you don't want to make holes in the wall you can lean the frames against the wall either on the floor or on a sideboard.

Floor

Rugs These are great not only for adding colour, pattern and texture but also for zoning spaces and covering unwanted marks or flooring. Personally I love the warm, patterned rugs that feel wonderful underfoot and add a lot of warmth and colour to the eye.

Palettes and wooden tiles You can also use wooden and movable tiles to separate spaces or to create pathway, the use of palettes can also add volume and levels play in an area.

Lighting Lighting is so important in any interior. The addition of floor and table lamps of different shapes and sizes and for different tasks can add so much. They can also be easily moved around.

Room dividers We at M&J are big fans of room dividers! These can be open bookshelves which also double as storage space. They help zone off areas - this could even mean - dividing off a sleeping space from a living area without building a solid wall. They can also be purely decorational adding another important layer to the space. A curtain can also make a great screen!

Furniture Choose pieces that you really love and that will last a long time. Basic, quality pieces that, with some great styling, can change the look each time. For example, the addition of cushions on a great couch or some beautiful glassware on a sideboard.

Shutters can be used as a shelf, as a bed head and for a more modern and designed look you'll just have to paint it the colour of your choice.

Mirrors Mirrors are great to use especially in small spaces. They add depth and create the illusion of a larger space. Over-sized mirrors don't even need to be hung and could look amazing propped against a wall.

Plants Greenery is an easy addition to any space. They add colour, texture, pattern and life!

Change hardware This is an easy one. Door, cupboard and drawer handles can be easily removed and stored and replaced with more fun and interesting ones.

Curtains Windows can be easily dressed with blinds or curtains to add warmth to a bare frame and some privacy.
